Sun in aspect to Moon
The Sun is the conscious self, the direction a life is pointed and the vitality behind it. The Moon is instinct, need and habit, the part that reacts before thought arrives. Contact between them links what a person intends with what that person actually feels, so purpose and comfort keep informing each other. Where the two are in aspect the inner life is not a separate department; it colours every decision, including the ones made in public. The pairing also carries the early images of mother and father, since these are the chart's two lights and the first models available for how to be a person.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
With a trine or a sextile the will and the appetite tend to agree. Rest restores, effort feels natural, and choices made for comfort rarely undercut the larger aim. Such charts are often described as being at ease with themselves, because there is little internal argument to manage. The mild cost is that a settled temperament may never develop much appetite for difficulty.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
A square or an opposition sets intention against instinct, so what the purpose wants tends to cost something at the level of comfort. Sleep, mood and family history all get drawn in. This is friction that builds rather than damages: the arrangement rules out autopilot, and genuine self-knowledge is the usual result. Integration arrives late and then holds.
The conjunction
Conjunct, the two lights merge and the birth falls near a new Moon. Instinct and intent speak with one voice, which gives force and a certain single-mindedness. There is less internal debate and also less internal perspective; a self of this kind is hard to see from inside. Feeling and purpose reinforce each other in both directions, and the rest of the chart matters more as counterweight.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
