The Sun is what a life is for; Mars is the muscle that goes and gets it, along with desire, competition and the capacity for anger. Contact between them puts heat behind the identity. Effort becomes part of self-definition, so these charts want something to push against and go slightly flat without one. Physical courage is common, and so is a low tolerance for being blocked. The pair also governs how assertion is understood: whether wanting something feels like an ordinary human act or like a claim that has to be justified first. Vitality tends to run high and to need regular discharge.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
A trine or a sextile gives drive that answers when called. Effort is well timed rather than forced, competitiveness stays sporting, and the person can be direct without much fear of the consequences. Stamina holds up under long work. Because the energy is available on demand, it is rarely examined, and a habit of solving problems by working harder can go unquestioned for years.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
The square and the opposition make effort a live issue rather than a background function. Anger arrives at awkward moments or arrives late, and force gets applied slightly out of proportion to the obstacle. What develops out of this is real skill with conflict, learned rather than inherited. These charts often accomplish more than the smooth ones, because nothing about assertion has been taken for granted.
The conjunction
Conjunct, identity and drive become one thing, and there is little gap between deciding and moving. Courage is genuine, patience is short, and the physical energy needs an outlet or it turns into irritability. Leadership comes naturally where speed matters. The blind spot is impact: the force applied feels ordinary from the inside and rather larger to everyone standing nearby.
