South Node and Lilith · an old exile
South Node in aspect to Lilith
The South Node is the practised ground and Lilith is the part that was cast out; together they describe someone who has been outside for so long that outside is where they are comfortable. The independence is genuine and thoroughly rehearsed. What is unexamined is whether the exclusion is still happening or is now being maintained. The two are indistinguishable to the person, because the maintenance is not deliberate — it consists of small pre-emptive withdrawals that never register as choices. The withdrawals are small enough that no single one would look like a decision to anybody watching.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
With a trine or a sextile the separateness is simply a resource. The person is self-sufficient, unbothered by disapproval, and can move in and out of groups without needing them. Long practice at being outside has left competence rather than damage, which is not the usual outcome. Very little in the arrangement asks to be changed, which is both its comfort and its ceiling.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
Square or opposition, the old banishment repeats itself. Belonging is arranged and then broken, and the breaking is narrated as inevitable. Testing whether a particular room would actually reject them is the uncomfortable and necessary experiment, and it requires staying past the point where the configuration's prediction would normally be self-fulfilled. One room, tested properly, settles a question that decades of assumption never will.
The conjunction
Conjunct, being the outsider is the default setting. There is deep familiarity with the position and very little curiosity about the alternative, which is the thing worth becoming curious about. The exclusion was real once; whether it is still happening is something nobody has thought to raise. Curiosity about the alternative is the whole of what is being asked, and it is not much.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
