Moon and Ceres · two kinds of mother

Moon in aspect to Ceres

The Moon is the need to be held and Ceres is the act of holding; together they are the most maternal contact a chart can make. Food, home and comfort carry unusual weight, and the early record of being fed — literally and otherwise — sets the pattern. It produces people who nourish instinctively and who are undone by separation more than they admit. Departures of every scale are felt disproportionately, including ordinary ones that everybody else treats as unremarkable. Children leaving home, a friend moving city, even a colleague changing jobs all register more than they would for anybody else.

What each body brings

Moonfeeling, need, habit
Ceresnurture and the cycle of loss and return

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)

With a trine or a sextile, giving and receiving care are both easy. The house is open, the table is full, and nobody is keeping score. It is one of the more straightforwardly comfortable contacts a chart can carry, and it tends to make the person's home the default gathering place for a wide circle. Nobody has to be invited twice, and most people do not wait to be invited at all.

The hard aspects (square or opposition)

A square or an opposition puts feeding at odds with being fed. Care is offered compulsively and accepted badly, or the person keeps recreating the household that failed them in order to run it correctly this time. Letting somebody else cook is a smaller and better intervention than it sounds, because it puts the person in the receiving position briefly and with nothing at stake.

The conjunction

Conjunct, need and nurture are the same reflex. The bond with the mother is central either by its warmth or by its absence, and food is almost always part of the story. Where the early experience was good this is one of the pleasantest contacts available; where it was not, the person spends decades providing an excellence they never received and rarely connects the two.

Reading it in a chart

The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
