Mercury and Vesta · concentration
Mercury in aspect to Vesta
Mercury moves quickly between things and Vesta will not be moved. Their contact produces exceptional powers of concentration: a mind that goes into one subject and stays, ignoring interruptions that would divert anyone else. It is the scholar's arrangement, and it is not adaptable — asking this person to switch tasks is asking for something structurally difficult, and the cost of the switch is paid in the twenty minutes it takes to get back down. Work arranged in long uninterrupted blocks gets several times more out of this person than the same hours scattered.
What each body brings
| Mercury | thinking, speech, learning |
|---|---|
| Vesta | devotion and focus |
The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
Trine or sextile, focus is available on demand and can be released. The person works deeply and can come out of it for dinner, which sounds trivial and is the whole difference between a productive life and a consuming one. It also means the work does not colonise the evening, which is what allows anybody living with them to keep enjoying it.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
Square or opposition, attention is either total or absent. Detail is pursued past all proportion, or the person cannot settle on anything long enough to finish. External structure — a deadline, a room, another person — does more than willpower, which this configuration has plenty of and cannot aim. Environment does more here than resolve: change the room and the problem frequently disappears without any decision having been made about it.
The conjunction
Conjunct, thought is devotional. Such people become authorities on narrow subjects and are perfectly happy about it, whatever anyone else thinks of the subject. Being interrupted mid-thought costs them considerably more than it costs most people. They are also the person who has read the primary sources, which becomes evident about ten minutes into any conversation about the subject.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
