Mercury in aspect to Mars
Mars sharpens whatever it contacts, and applied to Mercury it sharpens the mind. Thought is quick, decisive and combative; argument is enjoyed rather than tolerated, and the person is unusually willing to say the thing nobody else will. Mental energy is high and needs work to bite on. This is the debater's contact, and also the surgeon's, the engineer's and the investigative journalist's, since it combines speed with a taste for precision under pressure. The corresponding costs are impatience with slower reasoning, a tendency to interrupt, and words used as weapons before the decision to use them has been made.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
A trine or a sextile gives mental sharpness that lands well. Decisions come quickly and hold up, criticism is direct without being wounding, and there is real skill in advocacy and in technical work requiring nerve. Manual and mental dexterity often go together. The risk is a low estimate of other people's pace, since thinking this fast makes deliberation look like hesitation.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
Square or opposed, the sharpness cuts before it is aimed. Arguments start easily, tone runs hotter than intended, and the mind can be its own irritant, running fast on very little rest. This is trainable material rather than a defect. The contact develops formidable rhetorical skill in charts that take the trouble, and the trouble is mostly a matter of the pause between the thought and the sentence.
The conjunction
Conjunct, mind and drive are one instrument: fast, forceful and blunt. Speech is direct to a degree that impresses some people and startles others. Decisiveness is genuine and mistakes are made at speed and corrected at speed. Debate is a pleasure. The nervous system runs warm here, so physical exercise and a definite end to the working day both matter more than they might elsewhere.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
