Mercury in aspect to Jupiter
Mercury handles detail, language and the near view; Jupiter handles meaning, principle and the far one. In contact they produce a mind interested in the whole picture. Learning is pursued for its own sake, explanation comes naturally, and there is a real gift for making a complicated matter intelligible. Teaching, publishing, law and travel appear often. The characteristic weakness is scale in the other direction: details get waved past, claims are made a size larger than the evidence, and the pleasure of a good generalisation outruns the patience for checking it. Optimism colours the reasoning itself.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
A trine or a sextile gives breadth with reasonable accuracy. Ideas are absorbed quickly and connected across fields, languages come easily, and the person explains things without condescension. Study and travel both go well. The mild cost is that a mind this fluent seldom has to work hard, and depth may be left to whichever subject happens to hold its attention longest.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
The square and the opposition keep the enthusiasm and loosen the rigour. Conclusions arrive ahead of the reading, promises are made in the warmth of a conversation, and opinion can be mistaken for knowledge. Correction is the whole curriculum here, and it works: these charts often become careful thinkers precisely because they have been publicly wrong and remembered it.
The conjunction
Conjunct, the mind runs large. Curiosity is wide, humour is quick, and there is a nearly constant appetite for more information. Teaching and writing come easily, and the person tends to talk at length when interested, which is most of the time. Editing is the acquired discipline: the first version of any thought here is longer and more confident than the finished one needs to be.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
