Mars in aspect to South Node
Mars acts and the South Node has acted this way many times already. The reflexes are fast, practised and rarely examined: a familiar way of getting angry, a familiar way of pushing, a familiar way of walking out. The capability is real and the automatic quality is the problem, since the response arrives before the situation has been assessed. Under pressure the person does not choose; they execute, and the execution is competent enough that nobody questions whether it was called for. Those close to them can usually predict the response, which is a fair sign that no assessment took place.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
Trine or sextile, the practised courage is available and proportionate. The person handles conflict competently because they have handled it before, and does not need to prove anything by it. They are usually the calmest person in a genuinely dangerous situation, and correspondingly unimpressed by anyone performing bravery in a safe one. They also de-escalate without appearing to try, largely because they are not frightened.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
A square or an opposition makes the reflex misfire. Fights are picked that belong to an earlier chapter, and the energy that should be going forward is spent re-running an argument already won. A deliberate pause before responding is worth more here than any amount of resolve, because resolve operates after the reflex has already fired and the pause operates before.
The conjunction
Conjunct, the drive runs on old instructions. There is considerable force and a tendency to aim it where it was aimed last time, which looks like decisiveness and is frequently repetition. The reflex is fast enough that the situation is rarely assessed first, and the person's account of why they acted is usually assembled afterwards.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
