Mars in aspect to Ceres
Mars asserts and Ceres provides; together they make someone who will go to considerable lengths on behalf of whoever is in their care and who is much less energetic on their own account. The protective instinct is real and can be fierce. Where the pairing struggles is in wanting for oneself, which feels obscurely like taking from somebody else. That arithmetic is not examined, because it does not present itself as an argument — it presents itself as an obvious fact about how much there is to go round.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
Trine or sextile, protection is proportionate. The person defends dependants effectively without turning it into a permanent state of alarm, and knows when the threat has passed. Physical energy goes into practical provision rather than into vigilance, which is what makes it sustainable. They also know the difference between a threat and an inconvenience, which most protective people do not.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
A square or an opposition sets appetite against provision. Anger appears in the kitchen, so to speak: care is given and then charged for. Separating the two — feeding without a claim, wanting without an apology — is the work, and each half is difficult independently of the other. The wanting half is usually the harder of the two and gets attempted second.
The conjunction
Conjunct, drive is entirely in the service of dependants. It makes an exceptional parent, carer or advocate, and someone who has very little practice at fighting for their own corner. Asking on their own behalf feels like a theft from whoever they are responsible for. Somebody else generally has to make their case for them, and often does.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
