Jupiter in aspect to Saturn
These two are the social planets, and their cycle sets much of the rhythm of public life. In a chart their contact concerns the balance between growth and consolidation. Jupiter proposes, Saturn examines the cost, and the outcome is either careful ambition or a persistent argument between optimism and doubt. Where the two are linked, plans are made large and then built slowly, which is a durable combination. Career progress tends to be gradual and well founded. Belief and scepticism sit close together here, so the person is rarely naive and rarely cynical for long either.

The soft aspects (trine or sextile)
A trine or a sextile gives realistic optimism. Opportunities are taken when the ground is firm, growth is funded rather than assumed, and the person is trusted with both the vision and the budget. Institutions tend to work in their favour. The moderate risk is moderation itself: a judgement this balanced may pass on the opportunity that only an unreasonable person would have accepted.
The hard aspects (square or opposition)
Square or opposed, hope and caution alternate rather than combine. Expansion is followed by contraction, confidence by doubt, and plans can be either overreached or over-restricted depending on which planet has the floor. The rhythm is instructive. Charts with this contact usually arrive at good judgement about scale, having tested both errors thoroughly and remembered what each of them cost.
The conjunction
Conjunct, growth and limit are decided together. Ambition is substantial and patient; the person builds rather than gambles, and prefers a plan that will still be standing in twenty years. Progress is steady and often unspectacular until it is considerable. The internal argument between what is possible and what is prudent never entirely resolves, and it serves as a reasonably accurate instrument.
Reading it in a chart
The orb settles how strongly this shows: a contact within a degree is a defining feature of a chart, one at the edge of the orb is a colouring. The signs the two planets occupy change the manner, the houses change the arena, and a third planet touching either of them can change the reading entirely.
