The fourth house: the house of home and ancestry

The fourth house sits at the bottom of the chart and describes origins: parents, ancestry, the family line, land and property, and the private interior of a life. The tradition also gives it endings, the conclusion of any matter and the state of things in old age. It is the least public of the four angles.

Roots, land and last things

The fourth is the house of the foundation. Traditional authors assign it parents and lineage, the family home, land and immovable property, buried things and treasure, and the conditions of a person's later years. It also carries the end of any matter, which is why in horary practice the fourth house is examined to see how a question will finally resolve rather than how it will begin.

Which parent belongs to the fourth is a genuine disagreement in the sources. Much of the older material places the father here and the mother in the tenth, some later writers reverse it, and a few read the fourth simply as the parental ground without specifying. There is no settling it from the texts, and careful practitioners note the ambiguity instead of pretending to a rule. What survives the disagreement is the underlying idea: the fourth describes what a person came from and what remains when the public part of a life is set aside.

How it is examined

The sign on the cusp gives the character of the domestic base and the atmosphere of the childhood household as the native experienced it, which is not always as others in the same house experienced it. The ruler shows where the attachment to home actually leads; a fourth ruler in the ninth house often accompanies a life lived at a distance from where it started. Planets in the fourth are read as close to the private core of the person, and their nature colours the sense of what home means.

Empty fourth houses are the normal case rather than the exception. Some houses must be vacant in any chart, since the bodies counted are fewer than the divisions, and an empty fourth carries no suggestion of a rootless life or an absent family. The cusp sign and its ruler supply the reading in full.

The largest divergence between systems

This is the house where the choice of system matters most. In quadrant systems the fourth house begins at the Imum Coeli, the point opposite the Midheaven, and that degree defines the base of the chart by construction. In whole sign houses the fourth house is simply the fourth sign from the rising sign, and the Imum Coeli can land in the third or the fifth whole sign house instead. A person whose chart shows a heavily tenanted fourth in Placidus may find the same planets sitting in the third or fifth under whole sign, with a different subject attached to them. Whole sign practitioners generally continue to read the Imum Coeli as a sensitive point wherever it falls, which recovers part of what the change removes.

An angular house

The fourth is angular, so its affairs tend to be forceful and to arrive rather than accumulate. Angularity here does not mean public visibility, since this is the most hidden of the angles; it means that matters of home, family and origin exert real pressure on the shape of a life and tend to show their hand at decisive moments rather than gradually.

Reading it responsibly

A chart cannot report what happened in a childhood, and it should not be used to supply memories or to settle disputes about a family's history. The fourth house describes a relationship to origin and privacy, and any account of the events themselves has to come from the person, not from the symbolism.
