The first house: the house of self

The first house begins at the Ascendant and describes the physical self: the body, the bearing, the way a person shows up before anything has been said. Older astrologers gave it vitality and the constitution as well, and treated its ruler as a thread running through the whole chart. It is the house of beginnings taken rather than beginnings received.

Mercury rejoices here. The joys are the houses each traditional planet is said to be most at ease in, and they are older than the house meanings we use now: Mercury in the first is part of how the first house came to mean what it means.

What the first house signifies

The first house opens at the Ascendant, the degree of the ecliptic rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Hellenistic astrologers called it the horoskopos, the hour marker, and counted the other eleven houses from it. Its traditional subjects are the body and its constitution, the stature and complexion, the temperament, and the manner in which a person appears to others before anything has been said or done.

The older texts give it more than that. Questions of vitality and length of life were referred here and to its ruler, and physicians who used astrology read the rising sign and any planets in it as a description of the native's basic balance of humours. The house also holds beginnings that a person initiates rather than inherits, which is why it was consulted at the start of any venture undertaken in one's own name. Modern writing compresses all of this into the word identity, which is serviceable but narrower than the tradition it summarises.

How the house is read

Three pieces of evidence are weighed separately. The sign on the cusp sets the general style: a fixed sign rising suggests a steadier bearing than a mutable one, and the element sets the temperature. The ruler of that sign is the chart ruler, and the house it occupies shows where the life tends to be pointed, so a chart ruler in the tenth reads quite differently from the same planet in the sixth. Planets actually sitting in the first house are the loudest testimony, since they attach directly to the body and the presentation.

When no planet occupies the first house, nothing is missing. Ten moving bodies cannot fill twelve divisions, so every chart has empty houses, usually four or five of them. An empty first is read through the rising sign and its ruler, and that is a complete reading rather than a partial one. A house with three planets in it is not more important than a vacant one; it is busier, and often more complicated.

Whole sign against quadrant

The two systems agree here more than anywhere else, since both put the Ascendant in the first house. They differ over what else belongs to it. Whole sign houses assign the entire rising sign to the first, so a planet at three degrees of a sign that rises at twenty-five degrees is still a first house planet. Quadrant systems such as Placidus and Regiomontanus begin the house at the exact Ascendant degree, which places that same planet in the twelfth. One arrangement describes a person whose manner is visibly coloured by that planet; the other describes something held back from view. Astrologers who work with both tend to read the planet twice and let the life settle the question.

An angular house

The first is one of the four angles, with the fourth, seventh and tenth. Angular houses were reckoned the strongest positions a planet could hold: their matters tend to become visible early, to act rather than wait, and to appear in the outer life rather than staying internal. A planet placed here is called prominent, for good or ill, and its qualities are usually among the first things people notice.

The limits of this

House placement is one factor among several, and a strong first house statement can be softened or contradicted by aspects, by the condition of the ruler, or by circumstances no chart records. None of it forecasts what a person will do. It describes tendencies that astrologers have found worth noting, in a symbolic language that has been revised many times and will be revised again.
