The second house: the house of substance

The second house covers what a person owns and can carry away: money, possessions, earned income. The tradition also places livelihood here, along with the practical means by which a life is kept going. Later astrology added values and self-worth, an extension of the older idea of what one has to draw on.

Substance in the older sense

Traditional texts call the second the house of substance, meaning movable goods rather than land. Money, portable property, stock and the tools of a trade belong here, and so does livelihood itself: the work by which income arrives, and the assistants or backers who help it along. Some Latin sources name the place the Gate of Hades, a title that has less to do with anything sinister about property than with the position of the house, sunk below the horizon and forming no classical aspect to the Ascendant.

The division between second house wealth and eighth house wealth is old and still worth keeping. What is earned, held and spent at one's own discretion is second house; what arrives through another party, by legacy, marriage or partnership, is eighth. Contemporary astrology reads the second as personal values and the sense of one's own worth, which follows sensibly from the idea of resources but is not what the older authors were describing.

Reading the house

The sign on the cusp describes an attitude to resources rather than a quantity of them: an earth sign suggests accumulation and reluctance to spend, an air sign a lighter and more circulating relationship with money. The ruler carries more weight. The house that ruler occupies suggests where income tends to originate and where it tends to go, and its condition suggests whether the flow is even or intermittent. Venus or Jupiter in the second has long been read as favourable for income and Saturn as slower gain with more caution, though neither amounts to a figure.

Most charts have an empty second house, and there is nothing to explain about that. Ten planets distributed across twelve houses guarantee vacancies; an empty second no more indicates poverty than a crowded one indicates wealth. The ruler continues to carry the subject, and much of a person's material life is described through the tenth, sixth and eleventh houses in any case.

Where the systems part

Whole sign houses put the sign following the rising sign into the second, without calculation and without argument. Quadrant systems derive the cusp from the Ascendant and the local latitude, and at middle and high latitudes the second cusp can fall a long way into a later sign, occasionally far enough that a whole sign is intercepted and never appears on a cusp at all. In practice a planet late in the sign after the Ascendant is a second house planet by whole sign and often still a first house planet by Placidus. The usual advice is to choose one system, apply it consistently, and note the places where the other would change the reading.

A succedent house

The second succeeds the Ascendant, which places it in the middle rank of the threefold classification. Succedent houses were held to be less immediate than the angles and more substantial than the cadent ones: their matters build up rather than announce themselves, and they hold and consolidate what the angles set going. That suits the subject well, since resources are normally gathered over years rather than produced at a stroke.

What this cannot settle

No house placement functions as an income statement. Economic conditions, family circumstance, health and freely taken decisions account for far more of a material life than any chart factor, and a reading that promises otherwise has overreached. The second house describes a relationship to having, not an amount had.
