Venus in the first house
Venus in the first house puts charm in the presence itself. Manner, appearance and a certain ease of address do a good deal of the work before anything has been achieved, and people tend to be well disposed toward the person on sight. Taste shows in dress and bearing, and pleasure is taken in one's own body and its comfort. Conflict is avoided instinctively, and vanity is the traditional hazard. The task attached here is to let the agreeableness carry substance, so being liked is a beginning rather than the whole enterprise.

Which sign holds it
Under whole-sign houses the rising sign settles every other house at once. If you know your Ascendant, this is the sign your first house holds and the planet that rules it.

Quadrant systems such as Placidus cut the houses by the angles instead, so a planet near a cusp can land in a different house from the whole-sign answer. The chart page shows both.
Reading it in context
A keynote is a starting point, not a verdict. What Venus actually does in your first house depends on its sign, its aspects, its dignity, and whether it is in sect. Two people with the same placement and different charts around it live it differently.
