The seventh house: the house of partnership
The seventh house begins at the Descendant and describes the other party: the spouse, the business partner, the counterparty to a contract, and the opponent in an open dispute. The tradition treats allies and adversaries as the same category, since both are people met face to face and dealt with directly.
The other party
Marriage stands at the head of the older lists, along with the spouse considered as a person with their own qualities rather than as an aspect of the native. Business partners follow, then contracts and agreements of every sort, then lawsuits and the people on the other side of them. Traditional texts also assign open enemies to the seventh, and the pairing of husband and adversary in one house strikes modern readers as odd until the organising principle is noticed: this house holds whoever stands opposite and is met openly, whatever the relationship between them turns out to be.
Some sources add further items that follow from the geometry. The Descendant is the setting point, so a few authors connect the seventh with the close of life, and horary practice uses it for the astrologer consulted, for thieves and fugitives, and for anyone described as the other side of a question. Contemporary astrology narrows the house to relationship and projection, which captures much of it but loses the adversarial half.
What is weighed
The sign on the Descendant describes the qualities a person tends to meet in others and to seek in partnership, which are frequently qualities they do not readily claim in themselves. The ruler is central: where it sits often describes the circumstances in which significant partnerships form, and its condition speaks to how those partnerships tend to fare. Planets in the seventh are read as belonging to the partner as much as to the native, one of the few places in the chart where the symbolism is routinely assigned to somebody else.
A vacant seventh house is neither a warning nor a promise, and it is perfectly common. The count forbids a planet in every house, and no chart manages it. Where the seventh is empty the Descendant sign and its ruler describe the relational life on their own, and Venus, the Moon and the Sun are consulted alongside them as they would be in any case.
Where the systems agree
Like the first, the seventh is a house where whole sign and quadrant division largely coincide, since the Descendant falls in the seventh house under both. The divergence concerns the neighbours: a planet in the sign opposite the rising sign but at an earlier degree is seventh house by whole sign and sixth by Placidus, which is the difference between a reading about a partner and a reading about work. The disagreement is narrow but consequential, and it is worth checking the degree before building an interpretation on it.
An angular house
The seventh is angular, and its affairs behave accordingly: they tend to be conspicuous, to arrive as identifiable events, and to press on the shape of a life rather than sitting in the background. Planets here are strong in the traditional sense and their qualities are usually evident to anyone watching the person's relationships from outside.
What it will not tell
The seventh house does not name a person, fix a date for a marriage, or determine whether one will last. Older texts made all three claims and none of them holds up. The house describes an orientation toward partnership and a set of qualities a person is inclined to meet in others, which is useful for reflection and useless as a forecast.
