Mercury in the seventh house
Mercury in the seventh house thinks in dialogue. Ideas arrive properly only when there is someone to try them on, and the person makes a natural negotiator, counsellor or business partner. Marriage often involves a difference of age, of mind or of language, and agreements are central to the life. Open opposition tends to be argued rather than fought. Fairness is instinctive. The requirement is to reach a settled view alone as well, so the position held is genuinely one's own and not the last persuasive voice.
In plain words
Mercury stands for how you think and talk. This house is the part of your life about partners and close relationships. Here, that shows up in the partners you choose and how you handle a relationship.

Which sign holds it
Under whole-sign houses the rising sign settles every other house at once. If you know your Ascendant, this is the sign your seventh house holds and the planet that rules it.

Quadrant systems such as Placidus cut the houses by the angles instead, so a planet near a cusp can land in a different house from the whole-sign answer. The chart page shows both.
Reading it in context
A keynote is a starting point, not a verdict. What Mercury actually does in your seventh house depends on its sign, its aspects, its dignity, and whether it is in sect. Two people with the same placement and different charts around it live it differently.
