The sixth house: the house of servants and sickness

The sixth house is the traditional house of illness and of servants, two subjects modern astrology has largely replaced with work and daily routine. The older material is blunt about it, naming the place Bad Fortune and grouping bodily affliction with drudgery and the people who performed it. Mars rejoices here.

What the tradition actually says

The sixth is named Mala Fortuna, Bad Fortune, in the Hellenistic scheme, and the older lists are unsentimental. Illness and bodily injury head them: acute complaints, chronic conditions, and the weaknesses that wear at a constitution over years. Then come servants and slaves, subordinates and hired labour, and after them small livestock and the animals kept for use rather than company. The common thread is maintenance, the unglamorous work by which a body and a household are kept running. The place was reckoned unfortunate because it makes no aspect to the Ascendant and because its subjects were the ones people would rather not think about.

The servant category deserves saying plainly. These texts were written in societies that held people in slavery, and the sixth house is where those people were classified, alongside the animals and the illnesses. Modern astrology reads the house as employment, colleagues, service and daily routine, which is a translation into different social conditions rather than a discovery. Knowing what the older category contained is part of reading the tradition honestly.

Reading it in a chart

The sign on the cusp describes the texture of daily work and the kind of routine a person settles into. The ruler shows where the effort is actually directed, and its condition has traditionally been consulted for the resilience of the constitution, though only as one testimony among many. Planets in the sixth are read as bound up with labour and with the body's upkeep; Mars is said to rejoice here, which the older authors explain by Mars finding its natural work in a house of exertion, difficulty and things that must be cut away.

Emptiness in the sixth is ordinary arithmetic and not a clean bill of health, just as a crowded sixth is not a diagnosis. Every chart leaves several houses vacant. The cusp ruler carries the subject, and any serious question about health belongs to a physician rather than to a chart in any case.

The two systems here

Whole sign assigns the sixth sign from the rising sign and treats the house as one clean unit, which also keeps the classical geometry intact: the sixth makes no aspect to the first, and that aversion is precisely what earned it its reputation. Quadrant systems can place a planet in the sixth by cusp while it still occupies the same sign as a fifth or seventh house planet, which blurs the aspect logic the older judgement rested on. Astrologers who care about the traditional reasoning tend to prefer whole sign for that reason; those who work with modern techniques often find the quadrant sixth a better fit for questions about employment.

A cadent house

The sixth is cadent, falling away from the Descendant. Its matters tend to work slowly and out of sight, accumulating through repetition rather than arriving as events. That is a fair description of both habit and chronic illness, and it is why the house rewards attention over long periods rather than at single moments.

A necessary limit

No placement in this house indicates that a person will fall ill, and no chart should be used to diagnose anything. The tradition drew a connection between the sixth and the body's difficulties; it did not establish one. What the house describes reliably is a relationship to routine, effort and the work of keeping things going.

The sixth house is cadent. Cadent houses fall away from the angles. Their matters are the most diffuse and the most internal, which is why the tradition rates them weakest and modern practice often finds them the most interesting.
