Mercury in the eleventh house
Mercury in the eleventh house thinks with other people. Friendships are largely intellectual, groups are joined for the conversation in them, and hopes are formulated clearly enough to be written down. The person often serves as secretary, organiser or spokesman for a circle without much intending to. Ideas travel well through networks here, and younger friends are common. Association is a mode of thought. What this placement asks is a set of aims held for one's own reasons, since a mind shaped entirely by its company stops being able to disagree.
In plain words
Mercury stands for how you think and talk. This house is the part of your life about friends, groups and hopes. Here, that shows up in your friends, your groups and the future you hope for.

Which sign holds it
Under whole-sign houses the rising sign settles every other house at once. If you know your Ascendant, this is the sign your eleventh house holds and the planet that rules it.

Quadrant systems such as Placidus cut the houses by the angles instead, so a planet near a cusp can land in a different house from the whole-sign answer. The chart page shows both.
Reading it in context
A keynote is a starting point, not a verdict. What Mercury actually does in your eleventh house depends on its sign, its aspects, its dignity, and whether it is in sect. Two people with the same placement and different charts around it live it differently.
