The eleventh house: the house of friends and good spirit
The eleventh house covers friends and allies, patrons and benefactors, the groups a person belongs to, and the hopes and wishes carried through a life. Hellenistic astrologers named it the Good Spirit and considered it one of the most fortunate places in the chart. Jupiter rejoices there.
Jupiter rejoices here. The joys are the houses each traditional planet is said to be most at ease in, and they are older than the house meanings we use now: Jupiter in the eleventh is part of how the eleventh house came to mean what it means.
The Good Spirit
Bonus Daemon, the Good Spirit, is the Latin title of the eleventh, and the tradition treats it warmly. Friends come first, meaning allies and supporters rather than mere acquaintances, and with them come patrons, benefactors and the favour of people in a position to help. The older texts also place hopes and wishes here, understood as the outcomes a person works toward over years, and in horary practice the eleventh is examined for whether a hoped-for thing will come about.
Groups belong to the house as well: associations, guilds, factions and the wider circles a person moves within. The eleventh follows the tenth, and part of its meaning is what accrues from having a position, namely the network and the goodwill that a public standing brings with it. Modern astrology emphasises community and shared cause, which is a fair reading of the same material through a different social lens.
Working with the house
The sign on the cusp describes the kind of company a person keeps and the manner in which alliances are formed. The ruler shows where friendship and support actually operate; an eleventh ruler in the second often accompanies a life where friends and income are closely intertwined, for better and worse. Planets in the eleventh describe qualities that arrive through other people's goodwill. Jupiter is said to rejoice here, which the older writers explain by the natural fit between Jupiter's generosity and a house concerned with benefit received.
An empty eleventh is unremarkable and says nothing about whether a person has friends. No chart has a planet in every house, because the count does not allow it, and a vacant eleventh is read through its cusp ruler exactly as a tenanted one is read through its occupants. The distribution of planets reflects where they happened to be, not what a life contains.
How the systems treat it
Whole sign takes the eleventh sign from the rising sign. Quadrant systems place the eleventh between the Midheaven and the Ascendant's opposite quadrant boundary, and because the Midheaven does not always fall in the whole sign tenth, a planet can be an eleventh house planet in one system and a tenth house planet in the other. The interpretive difference is real: the same placement reads as professional standing under one and as the alliances that standing produces under the other. In a chart where a planet sits close to that boundary, both readings are usually worth holding.
A succedent house
Succeeding the tenth angle, the eleventh sits in the middle band of the threefold classification. Its matters neither arrive suddenly nor stay wholly out of sight; they accumulate. That describes friendship and reputation among peers accurately enough, since both are built slowly and both tend to persist once established.
A note on what this covers
The house describes an orientation toward alliance and shared purpose, not a guarantee of loyal friends or influential patrons. Traditional writers were often confident about which benefactors would appear and when; that confidence was not warranted. What can honestly be said is how a person tends to approach belonging, and what they tend to hope for.
Where it sits in the chart
The eleventh house is succedent. Succedent houses follow the angles. Their matters build rather than announce themselves, and they hold what the angles begin.
In this app the eleventh house is summarised as friends, groups, hopes, and the chart page shows both its quadrant cusp and its whole-sign equivalent, along with the ruler of the sign on the cusp and any planets inside it.
