Aries Sun · Cancer Moon · a square
Aries Sun with a Cancer Moon
A square between the cardinal signs of fire and water, and the argument is constant. The Aries Sun is trying to become independent, blunt and first; the Cancer Moon cannot feel safe unless it is attached, protective and sure it has hurt nobody. Anger flares and is followed immediately by guilt, and the guilt lasts far longer than the anger did. Courage shows most clearly on behalf of family rather than for its own sake, which is the productive form of the conflict. Sensitivity gets hidden behind a hard front, sometimes for decades. Letting the softness be visible without treating it as a defeat is the work of this pairing.
The two signs
| The pair | a square — the same modality and a clash of element: an argument the person carries internally |
|---|---|
| Sun in Aries | fire (energy, will and enthusiasm), cardinal (starting things), ruled by Mars |
| Moon in Cancer | water (feeling, empathy and intuition), cardinal (starting things), ruled by Moon |
| Elements | fire and water |
What is missing from this page
A Sun and Moon pair is two of the ten placements in a chart. The rising sign changes how both are expressed, the houses say where the story happens, and an aspect from Saturn or Jupiter to either light can change the reading entirely. This page is a starting point, not a summary of a person.

Why the Sun and the Moon, and not just the Sun
A Sun sign on its own describes what a person is aiming at. It says nothing about what they need in order to be able to aim at anything. The Moon is that second thing: the conditions under which a person can rest, recover and feel safe enough to act.
Most of what makes a chart feel like a specific person rather than one of twelve types comes from the relationship between those two. When the Sun and Moon are in signs of one element the two run together and the person tends to be legible to themselves. When they are square or in aversion, the thing that restores the person is not the thing that advances them, and the life has an argument running through it. Neither arrangement is better; they are different problems.
You need a birth time for the Moon
The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so it changes sign every two and a half days. A birth near a sign boundary can be either sign depending on the hour, and no lookup table can settle it. Casting the chart is the only way to be certain.
