What a Saturn return is

Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to go round the zodiac, so at roughly 29, 59 and 88 it comes back to the exact degree it held when you were born. Astrologers read that return as the end of one structural chapter and the start of the next: the first one is the passage into adulthood proper, the second into eldership, the third into old age.

The reputation for difficulty comes from what Saturn tests rather than what it inflicts. A structure built on something real tends to survive the return and get firmer; one built on convenience, or on someone else's expectations, tends to come apart during it.
