Mercury in the ninth house
Mercury in the ninth house thinks in large terms. Philosophy, law, religion, foreign languages and long journeys occupy the mind, and learning tends to continue well past any formal end. Teaching and publishing suit the placement, as does the habit of turning an experience into a principle. The weakness is a taste for the sweeping statement. Facts get gathered in service of a view. The task involved is to keep the detail honest, so the broad understanding rests on what was actually found.
In plain words
Mercury stands for how you think and talk. This house is the part of your life about travel, study and beliefs. Here, that shows up in how far you travel, what you study and what you believe.

Which sign holds it
Under whole-sign houses the rising sign settles every other house at once. If you know your Ascendant, this is the sign your ninth house holds and the planet that rules it.
| Aries rising | Sagittarius · ruled by Jupiter |
|---|---|
| Taurus rising | Capricorn · ruled by Saturn |
| Gemini rising | Aquarius · ruled by Saturn |
| Cancer rising | Pisces · ruled by Jupiter |
| Leo rising | Aries · ruled by Mars |
| Virgo rising | Taurus · ruled by Venus |
| Libra rising | Gemini · ruled by Mercury |
| Scorpio rising | Cancer · ruled by Moon |
| Sagittarius rising | Leo · ruled by Sun |
| Capricorn rising | Virgo · ruled by Mercury |
| Aquarius rising | Libra · ruled by Venus |
| Pisces rising | Scorpio · ruled by Mars |
Quadrant systems such as Placidus cut the houses by the angles instead, so a planet near a cusp can land in a different house from the whole-sign answer. The chart page shows both.
Reading it in context
A keynote is a starting point, not a verdict. What Mercury actually does in your ninth house depends on its sign, its aspects, its dignity, and whether it is in sect. Two people with the same placement and different charts around it live it differently.
