Mars in the twelfth house
Solitude, secrecy, confinement and the slow undoing of things belong to the twelfth house. Mars here works out of sight. Effort goes into private projects, unseen labour, work behind the walls of hospitals, prisons or large organisations, and anger is more often suppressed than expressed, which can leave it circling as tension or a dream. Enemies tend to be unnamed rather than declared. Considerable strength exists in the placement, but it is strength that dislikes an audience. What it asks over the years is an outlet, some deliberate physical or private channel where the energy is spent rather than stored.

Which sign holds it
Under whole-sign houses the rising sign settles every other house at once. If you know your Ascendant, this is the sign your twelfth house holds and the planet that rules it.

Quadrant systems such as Placidus cut the houses by the angles instead, so a planet near a cusp can land in a different house from the whole-sign answer. The chart page shows both.
Reading it in context
A keynote is a starting point, not a verdict. What Mars actually does in your twelfth house depends on its sign, its aspects, its dignity, and whether it is in sect. Two people with the same placement and different charts around it live it differently.
